CPL Ben Kopp joined the United States Army early in his senior year of high school. Only one month after graduating high school in Rosemount, MN, he was on his way to Ft. Benning, GA. He had joined the military out of reverence for his great grandfather’s service during WWII and to avenge the events of September 11, 2001. Seven months later, he was assigned to the 3/75th Ranger Regiment.

Half way through his third deployment in the spring of 2009, Ben would save six of his fellow Rangers in a firefight with the Taliban. Unfortunately, he also took a bullet to the leg. He underwent surgery in Afghanistan and was transported through Germany to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC.

On July 18th, 2009, eight days after being shot, CPL Ben Kopp was declared brain dead which enabled him to become an organ donor. He was 21. The donation of his organs, bone, skin and tissue saved or enhanced the lives of 60 people. His heart is still beating today in the chest of a woman in suburban Chicago.

In life and in death, CPL Ben Kopp is a hero.
